I am almost able now to predict these kinds of articles and blog posts, almost by heart. First, there's the "Wikipedia has its pros and cons, but if you're going to try to edit it, make sure you learn the ropes." Then there's the "You cannot self-promote on Wikipedia, but you can influence the discussion by being open and transparent." Then there's the stuff about "You might embarrass yourself if you get caught manipulating."

Oh, really?

Somebody explain to me how the [[Elonka Dunin]] is not shameless self-promotion. Somebody explain to me the exact steps Jimmy Wales took to influence the course of editing on the [[Rachel Marsden]] article in February 2008 (did he act transparently?). Somebody explain to me how my enterprise, MyWikiBiz, published about 12 articles in Wikipedia in exchange for payment -- those I disclosed were deleted or savaged, while those I did not disclose are happily evolving and whistling a happy tune (for years) on Wikipedia.

[...] Editing Your Own Wikipedia Article is frowned upon by Wikipedia, but it’s not banned and it can be done well. Social media marketers could do well to follow Tarnya’s lead. If you’re interested in the topic, check out the developing discussion on the rules of engagemen for social media marketers and bloggers here. [...]

Regarding #2, you could also buy a book or two about editing Wikipedia, which include both technical information and lots about the Wikipedia community:

* Wikipedia: The Missing Manual, published in January 2008 (disclaimer: I'm the author)

* How Wikipedia Works, due out in August 2008

I think that's mostly right, except for #1. Control is possible, but you have to know how to acquire it, or to ensure that you write things that are supported by those who already have it.

The problem with articles like this are that they are sort of "ideal world" prescriptions. Ideally, this would be how it actually works. But you could definitely bias your company's article if you know how to work the system.

I think you've got this mostly right, but I don't agree with people using Wikipedia as a promotional tool.
