What’s on my bookshelf at the moment

I love reading books on marketing and advertising because, quite clearly, I am a marketing and advertising nerd. Here’s what’s on my bookshelf at the moment, in no particular order:

  • The Long Tail - Chris Anderson’s classic musings on the economics of endless choice and unlimited demand on the Internet
  • Marketing Planning and Strategy - Standard-issue marketing management textbook
  • Cutting Edge Advertising - It’s a print advertising book, but Jim Aitchinson’s third edition has tonnes of creative inspiration
  • Hey Whipple, Squeeze This - A great guide to creating great advertising that no award-school graduate should be without
  • Lovemarks - The future beyond brands by Kevin Roberts, Saatchi and Saatchi’s worldwide CEO, not as promising as it sounds unfortunately
  • Principles of Marketing - Edition 12e of the book that has probably made Phillip Kotler a gazillionaire
  • Meatball Sunday - I reckon Seth Godin lost his way, funnily enough, with Tribes, but this one is a good read

What are you reading at the moment? I have a long weekend coming up and would love some inspiration…

      Hey Matt,

I’m currently reading Bob Pooles Listen first - sell later. Bobs blog cal be found here http://www.pooleswatercooler.com/ it is a great read and highly inspirational. it focuses mainly on selling but the theme centres around relationships with customers. Highly recommend reading it!

      Have you read buy.ology?
Great scientific basis for why we buy what we buy.

Amazing how so much of our purchase decisions are not done at the conscious level.
Interestingly, the same thesis is backed up in “The Time Paradox”, by psychologist Philip Zimbardo (of Lucifer Effect fame), which I’ve just started reading.

Thanks for some inspiration for future reads. I’m currently working my way through two oldies: Confessions of an Advertising man by David Ogilvy and The Art of Writing Advertising: Conversations with Bernbach, Ogilvy, Burnett and others by Dennis Higgins.

I loved Hey Whipple Squeeze This, fantastic book for any copywriter.

Just got done reading Dan Pink’s A Whole New Mind which I think you’ll really enjoy. Have also been told, as Andrew suggests, Buy.ology is great.

Currently half way through Blink as I hadn’t read it yet. It’s good in the way you would expect a Malcolm Gladwell book to be; not necessarily a page turner, but nothing tedious or laboured.

One book I didn’t enjoy recently was The Watchmen - I thought perhaps even though I have no interest in comic books, making Time’s 100 most important books of all time list probably made it a good candidate for reading.

      How wrong I was.
